DAR honors distinguished women
UTICA, N.Y. >> On Monday afternoon, Sept. 17, members of the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution gathered at Forest Hills Cemetery to dedicate DAR markers on the graves of two distinguished members of the Oneida Chapter.
The first grave marked was Frances White Roberts, who was Oneida chapter regent from 19021906 and New York state regent from 1906-1908. The second grave was that of Julia Seymour Conkling, wife of Congressman Roscoe Conkling, and founding member of the Oneida chapter in 1893.
The ceremonies began with a welcome from Nancy Langenegger, chapter regent, an invocation given by New York State Chaplain Theresa Willemsen, and then the DAR ritual was preformed. Patrice Birner, New York state historian, gave a tribute to Roberts, and Mary Cardinale read a tribute to Conkling written by the late Florence Roy, past regent of the Oneida chapter. Flags and wreaths were placed on each of the graves of these two distinguished ladies by members of the Oneida chapter.
