Twist on fairy tales
The Chittenango High School’s annual fall play will have actors attempt to combine all 209stories into one.
CHITTENANGO, N.Y. >> The fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm are getting turned on their head at the Chittenango High School’s annual fall play.
Playing this year is “The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon” by Don Zolidis at Chittenango High School from Nov. 15 to Nov. 17 at 7 p.m.
This fast-paced, rollicking ride features two narrators and several actors attempt to combine all 209 stories, ranging from classics like “SnowWhite”, “Cinderella”, and “Hansel and Gretel” to more bizarre, obscure stories like “The Devil’s Grandmother” and “The Girl Without Hands”.
Assistant Director Tyler Sternberg says the fall play is a tradition at Chittenango High School for decades and is unique among some other area schools, in that their productions are mostly student-run.
“Everything. Sets, costumes, hair and makeup, sound and lights, and media/publicity are
completely designed and operated by the students,” Sternberg said. “Two of our senior students even have a hand in directing.”
Nearly forty students and six adults were involved in this year’s production, The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon, which is one of the largest productions the Chittenango High School has put on in twenty years.
“In this year’s show, Don Zolidis’s wild imagination comes to life onstage in the form of a zany, irreverent adaptation of the Brothers Grimm stories, inter- twined with guts and gore, student-written song and dance, and interactive audience participation, which affects the course of the show,” Sternberg said.
Tickets are $8 for general admission at the door or by phone at 315- 6872900
Runtime is approximately 120 minutes with a 10 minute intermission, at which time refreshments will be available for purchase.
Content of the show includes brief crude language and innuendo. The Chittenango High School suggest that students under the age of 14 be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
