HAMILTON, N.Y. >> Chase away the winter blues on Friday, Feb. 22, with Arts at the Palace’s second annual Cabin Fever Festival.
Zach Deputy will headline the evening, including Mike Powell & The Black River, and New Kingston. Show starts at 7pm. There will be a cash bar, plus food will be available for purchase by Ray Brother’s BBQ. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., as will the food and bar. Admission is $25 per ticket, or $22 for students over 18 with ID.
Deputy’s one man show creates a unique experience. As a pioneer of looping and synth guitar work, he’s taken the technology to uncharted lands delivering a pocket groove unique to the ears, combining his family roots Island vibe with his low country southern soul, and a pinch of tranced out hippy hop.
New Kingston formed in 2006 in the basement of their Brooklyn home, when brothers Tahir ( keys), Courtney Jr. (drums) and Stephen ( guitar) began covering music by the likes of Bob Marley, Earth Wind & Fire, Dennis Brown, Michael Jackson, The Whispers and many more. The three brothers, under the watchful eye of their father (and bassist) Courtney Panton Sr., called themselves New Kingston to appropriately reflect a combination of their Jamaican heritage and their present lives in progressive New York City. The musical styles of both places informed their sound and songwriting. As second generation JamaicanAmericans, they are able to just as easily hold their own with the traditional reggae scene.
Mike Powell left the town of Champion in 2001 and went on to Syracuse University where, in four years, he became the most decorated college lacrosse player in the history of the sport. After college, despite being the number one draft pick in both professional lacrosse leagues, Powell declined the offers to play professionally and instead packed up his guitar and hit the road to play music in coffee shops and folk houses all over the American west.
