A City of Oneida dump truck ended up in a ditch after a resident backed their truck into it.

ONEIDA, N.Y. >> A city of Oneida dump truck ended up in a ditch after a traffic accident on Route 5 Wednesday afternoon.

“I was in the kitchen handing out a meal to my employee when we all heard a crunch,” Sunshine Hammon, owner of the Fireside, said. “I could see the looks on everyone’s face and then someone saying to call 911.”

Officer Tom Lenning of the Oneida City Police Department said the city of Oneida dump truck was heading east on Route 5 when the accident occurred. “A vehicle was attempting to back out of a driveway,” Lenning said. “It backed into the road way. The city dump truck tried to avoid a collision with the pick-up truck, but couldn’t and made contact. It flipped over on the side of the road and lost its load of stone.”

Hammon said when she stepped out of the Fireside, she thought the air was full of smoke — but it turned out to be dust. “By the time we got out, the truck was already rolling,” Hammon said.

Hammon said the driver of the pickup truck was the first person to try and get to the city truck driver. “By the time my employee and a customer got over to them, they were helping him out,” Hammon said.

The driver of the dump truck was shaken, Hammon said, and didn’t look to have any serious injuries. “We brought over a chair for him to sit in and then he was taken to the hospital,” Hammon said. “He only complained of some elbow pain. But he was talking and aware of who he was, where he was and what day it was.”

Hammon said the city dump truck driver was sure he was in the other driver’s blind spot

“They were both more concerned about each other,” Hammon said.

As of time of print, police had not released the name of the dump truck driver; the driver of the car that backed out of the driveway; or if any tickets were issued. The status of both drivers had also not been released.
