Students learn about weather

ONEIDA, N.Y. >> Fifth and sixth grade students at St. Patrick’s School were treated with a visit from WKTV News Channel 2 Chief Meteorologist Bill Kardas on Tuesday, May 21.

Kardas presented a slide show and talked to students about how meteorologists predict the weather using sophisticated weather technology and computer models. He presented a slideshow about different types of weather, and there was a lively discussion about the tornado warning from last Sunday and what students did to stay safe in the weather that day.

“Our students are very interested in the subject of science, particularly the science of weather, so I thought having Bill come to speak would be a great learning experience for them,” said school principal Kristin Healt. “We even had a former graduate come back to watch the presentation because he is interested in becoming a TV meteorologist one day.”

Students got a behindthe-scenes photo tour of the WKTV studio and were interested to learn that weather reporters stand in front of a green screen, not the actual weather maps and graphics seen when watching the broadcast. Students also found it interesting that there are no camera operators in the studio, as the cameras are all computer programmed by the news director.

Kardas also spoke to the students about The Ride for Missing Children coming up on June 7. The students told Kardas they would be looking for him as he rode by on Friday morning and they would give him a big wave to wish him luck on the ride.
