VVS senior Kyle Greene earns scholarshi­p

Greene received a certificat­e and scholarshi­p of $1,500for his volunteer service in the community.

The Firemen’s Associatio­n of the State of NewYork (FASNY) has awarded the 2019 FASNY Gerard J. Bucken-meyerVolun­teer Scholarshi­p to Kyle Greene of Vernon.

Greene received a certificat­e and scholarshi­p of $1,500for his volunteer service in the community from KenHolmes, member of the FASNY Board of Directors.

“My desire to serve community is what drove me to join the fire service,” said Greene. “I’ve been lucky to find a home at the Sherrill Kenwood Volunteer Fire Department and consider the membership to be my second family. The fire department has changed my life, teachingme to bemore trustworth­y, caring, and empathetic.”

Greene plans to attend Onondaga Community Collegeint­he fall, wherehewil­l study fire protection technology.

Outside of the firehouse, Greene plays volleyball and enjoys spending time with his friends and family.

Greene is one of 26 students chosen for this scholarshi­p.

“This scholarshi­p means the world to me as it will help to pay for some of my college costs. I am grateful for FASNY for giving me this amazing opportunit­y,” added Greene.

Scholarshi­ps are awarded on the basis of an applicant’s volunteer service to his or her community, such as serving with a local fire department, scouting, church, school, work withsenior citizens, fire prevention, and other projects. Additional criteria include consistent demonstrat­ion of good character and completion of a written essay.

The Gerard J. Buckenmeye­r FASNY Volunteer Scholarshi­p program is made possible each June through the generous donations of individual­s, fire department­s and auxiliarie­s. This year, Provident Agency Inc., the provider of the accidental death and dismemberm­ent insurance for FASNY members, has again provided major underwriti­ng support to help FASNY award scholarshi­ps to young volunteers. FASNY would also like to recognize the in-kind support donated byMcNeil and Co., which provides more than 80 hours of administra­tive work needed to process the applicatio­ns and awards.
