Oneida — On Friday, March 20- the Oneida City School District is hosting Charles Appelstein for parents. Attached is a photo of Mr. Appelstein. Are you looking for ways to engage with your children using positivity and humor, and also to set boundaries for your children to grow up to be independen­t, productive adults? Please join the Oneida City School District as we hear from social worker Charlie Appelstein, M.S.W. Charlie brings his message of hope and positivity to OCSD teachers and parents on Friday, March 20th, 2020 at the Oneida High School. The Oneida City School District looks to provide education around trauma-informed instructio­n and a focus on positive emotions. During the day on Friday, Appelstein will work with educators in a workshop entitled “No Such Thing as a Bad Kid. Understand­ing and Responding to Students with Emotional & Behavioral Challenges Using a Positive, Trauma-informed, Strength-based Approach”. Parents and members of the public are invited to a workshop that begins at 7pm Friday March 20 in the Oneida High School Cafeteria. This workshop is called “Helping Your Kids to Be All That They Can Be: Using a Positive, Strengthba­sed Approach for Effective Parenting.” This workshop will present a host of principles and techniques that help parents maximize the greatness that exists in every child and family. Topics covered include: What is strength-based parenting? Positive emotions and brain developmen­t; strength-based verbal interventi­ons including reframing, positive-predicting, and inspiratio­nal metaphors; encouragin­g growth vs. fixed mindsets; strategies for enhancing self-esteem in children; respectful, relationsh­ip-based limit setting; creative selfmanage­ment techniques; and tips for parents on how to manage their own emotions and responses. “Charlie is a very engaging speaker who speaks to the heart of every teacher and parent. He brings practical tips and strategies and the desire to shift your mindset to the positive”, said Jessica Poyer, Administra­tor of Curriculum, Instructio­n and Assessment for the Oneida City School District. The 7 p.m. workshop is open to the public and is FREE!
