The Colgate men’s hockey program was challenged as it faced off with No. 11 Quinnipiac on Friday night, but were able to skate with the nationally ranked opponent through regulation and overtime.

Holding strong through the 65:00, Colgate was able to earn a 2-2 tie behind a 32-save performance by Carter Gylander and goals by Josh Mckechney and Ethan Manderville.

Opening with fast play that extended across the sheet, the Raiders were challenging defenders to make space with the puck. After drawing a power play midway through the period, Colgate generated momentum with steady minutes in the offensive zone. It was energy that would carry on through the period, before Josh Mckechney scored with just 1:17 remaining to put the Raiders on top 1-0 after one.

The second period was one that was littered with penalties, starting off with the Raiders a man down. Shortly after returning to full strength, Quinnipiac was able to capitalize on their power play momentum by scoring from the point with a shot through heavy traffic.

Although it was a period filled with penalties, it was also one filled with goals – three to be exact. After Quinnipiac evened the scoreboard, Ethan Manderville notched his third goal in the last four games to regain Colgate’s lead at 2-1.

It was a quick answer though, as Quinnipiac evened it yet again just about two minutes later. Through all the penalties and goals of the period, the ECAC foes went to the locker room in a 2-2 stalemate after 40:00.

The third period featured tough battles along the board and moves to get around defenders at either team looked to break the tie late in the game. Try as they might, it wouldn’t be decided through regulation.

Colgate carried over 44 seconds

of penalty kill as they entered their seventh overtime session of the season. Fresh off the kill, the Raiders maintained possession through the majority of overtime as they cycled through the Quinnipiac zone. Despite a last-second shot by Trevor Cosgrove, the horn would sound on a 2-2 official overtime tie.

With the goalie game as strong as it was, both teams were held scoreless through the bestof-three shootout, before Quinnipiac claimed the eventual extra ECAC Hockey point for the standings in the sudden death fourth round.
