VERONA– Dr. John D. George III, 82, Main Street, died Monday, March 1, 2021, at his residence, following a brief illness.

Born in Rochester, on February 26, 1939, he was the son of Dr. John D. and Lucie R. Syracuse George, Jr. A lifelong resident of the area, Dr. George was a graduate of Vernon -Verona-sherrill High School, Colgate University and the University of Rochester School of Medicine, followed by his internship in family medicine at Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstow­n. He married Sharon Mercuri in Hamilton in 1985.

Dr. George practiced in Verona from 1967 until his retirement in 2014, rst with his father and then establishi­ng the Verona Family Practice. He also served with the United States Army in the Medical Corps for two years, during the Viet Nam War era. Dr. George was a communican­t of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, a member and past president of the Madison County Medical Society, a member and past president of the Four County Medical Society, served as the school and team physician for the Vernon-verona Sherrill schools, served as a member of the Board of Education of the Vernon -Verona-sherrill Schools. He loved shing on the St. Lawrence River, gardening and watching birds. He also volunteere­d, following retirement, at the Mary Rose Clinic.

Surviving besides his wife, Sharon are his three daughters, Deborah (Robert) Hesler of Miramar, Fl, Jill (William) Bean of Scotia and Jenna (Nick) Onody of Toronto, Canada; his two sons, John D. George IV of Scotia and Dr. Benjamin (Kerry) George of Rochester; his grandchild­ren, Andrew (Siwon), Michael, Kathryn and Amanda Hesler, William Jr. and Natalie Bean, Kylie and J.D. George V, Lucas George and Brielle Onody; three greatgrand­children, Zoe, Caleb and Maleah Hesler; his sister, Janet M. (Mark) Stewart of Jacksonvil­le, FL; his two brothers, David R. (Janet) George of Utica and Dr. Robert W. (Louise) George of Rochester; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the convenienc­e of the family from Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Reverend Edmund Castronovo, pastor. Interment, with full military honors, will be made in Verona Cemetery. Friends may call at the Campbell-dean Funeral Home, Inc. 260 Main Street, Oneida, 3- 7 PM, Monday.
