Old Forge woman involved in fatal accident

According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, deputies recently responded to a two-car fatal motor vehicle crash at State Route 28 at Woodgate Road in the Town of Forestport.

Jennifer Palermo, 43, of Old Forge, was operating a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee southbound on Route 28 with a 5-year-old and 10-year-old in the vehicle. Kirsten Down, 67, of Old Forge, was operating a 2018 Honda Accord on Woodgate Road attempting to turn northbound on Route 28 where she was struck by Palermo’s vehicle. Down was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office report.

Palermo and the children were all transporte­d by ambulance to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Utica for evaluation with minor injuries. The Criminal Investigat­ion Unit along with the ID unit were on scene investigat­ing. The crash was reconstruc­ted during the investigat­ion. The crash is still being investigat­ed, and no tickets have been issued.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by Forestport Fire Department, Boonville Fire Department, Woodgate Fire Department, Remsen Fire Department, NYSP, STAR Ambulance, Boonville Ambulance, and the Department of Transporta­tion.
