Barbara A. Potter, 90, of 75 West Seventh St., Oneida Castle, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 21, 2021, at her home after a brief illness.

She was born on June 6, 1931, the daughter of Carl A. and Grace L. Bartell Boehlert. She was a graduate of Oneida High School, Class of 1949. She then went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from Marywood College in Scranton, Class of 1953.

On July 10, 1954, Barbara was united in marriage to Robert W. Potter, in St. Patrick’s Church. Bob passed away on June 15, 2011.

Barbara was a teacher in the Canastota School District. After raising her children, she then went on to be a substitute teacher throughout the Oneida City School District for many years.

A lifelong resident of Oneida and a devout Catholic, she was a member of St. Patrick’s Church where she was a Eucharisti­c Minister for many years. She was also a member of their Altar and Rosary society and a member of Catholic Daughters. She was a former member of the Board of the Oneida Hospital Auxiliary and the Hazel Carpenter Home. She was a charter member of Kanon Valley Country Club and enjoyed many rounds of golf with the Tuesday Morning Ladies League there. She was active participan­t in the YMCA Swim Club. As the sixth of nine children, family played a tremendous part in Barbara’s life. Whether it was traveling to see her children and grandchild­ren or her frequent weekend visits to 23rd Ave in Sylvan Beach, she always looked forward to catching up on what sporting event, dance recital, school drama production, or educationa­l achievemen­t her family members had accomplish­ed. If she was able to be there to cheer you on in person, she was there more than likely with cookies in hand. Surviving are her seven children, Ann (Thomas) Cope, of Costa Mesa, CA, Thomas (Lynne) Potter, of W. Deptford, NJ, Timothy (Elizabeth) Potter, of Hilton Head, SC, Kathleen “Kitty” (William) Wallace, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Robert Webster “Web” (Tracey) Potter, of West Palm Beach, FL, Steven (Deborah) Potter, of Oneida, and Sally (James) Szukala, of Carrollton, TX; twenty grandchild­ren, Sarah Cope (Kyle Hayhoe), Alice (Tucker) Peleuses, Tim (Kylie) Potter, Kevin (Jill) Potter, Lauren (John) Elicker, III, David (Kayla) Potter, Alison Potter, Nicholas Potter, William “Gator” Wallace, Dylan Wallace, Casey Potter (Alex Daane), Jack Potter, Laura Potter (Maxwell Malbouf), Edward “Ted” Potter, Scott Potter, Webster Potter, Megan Szukala, Katherine “Katie” Szukala, Steven Szukala, and Emily Szukala; seven great-grandchild­ren, Shay, Reese, Emery, Jay, Nava, Lily, and Theo; one sister, Sister M. Carleen Boehlert, IHM, of Scranton, PA; two brothers, James (Rose Marie) Boehlert, of Vestal and Sylvan Beach, and William “Bill” (Carolyn) Boehlert, of Rio Medina, TX; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Barbara was predecease­d by a grandson, Henry Thomas Potter, on December 17, 2002; two sisters, Frances B. Ironside on May 30, 2001, and Mary Alice Lyons on August 12, 2017; three brothers, John B. Boehlert on June 3, 2006, Edward J. “Ted” Boehlert on April 9, 2009, and C. Richard Boehlert on October 20, 2017; two sisters-in-law, Marge Boehlert on October 22, 2004, and Mary Boehlert on April 28, 2020; two brothers-in-law, Dr. Alton E. Lyons on February 6,1975, and James D. Ironside on December 14, 1982; and a nephew, Dr. John A. Lyons on August 24, 2019.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 26, 2021, with a Prayer Service at 9:15 AM at the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., followed by her Funeral Mass at St. Patrick’s Church, 347 Main St., Oneida, at 10:00 AM where the Rev. Christophe­r Ballard will officiate. Interment will take place in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Family and friends are invited and may call on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home, 342 Main St., Oneida.
