Esther L. Hughes, 84, of 4045 Bleeker Rd., Vernon Center, passed away on Sunday morning, June 20, 2021, at her home.

She was born on December 31, 1936, in Sauquoit, the daughter of George and Ruth Hess Wicks. She was a graduate of Sauquoit High School, Class of 1955.

On January 26, 1957, Esther was united in marriage to Robert B. Hughes in New Hartford. Mr. Hughes passed away on September 26, 1995.

Esther was employed as a nurse’s aide for the NYS DDSO for over eighteen years, retiring in 1999. She was previously employed as the Postmaster at the Vernon Center Post Office for several years. She attended Vernon United Methodist Church. Esther was a life member of Vernon Center Fire Department Auxiliary. She was member of the Verona Seniors, the Vernon Seniors, and the Oriskany Falls Seniors, and TOPS in Vernon. Esther loved going on bus trips, playing bingo, and dining out. Her greatest joy in life was sharing stories about her grandchild­ren.

Surviving are her five children, Deborah Hughes, of Las Vegas, NV, Roberta Smith, of White Settlement, TX, Roxanne Hughes, of Clay, Lisa (Robert) Claflin, of Vernon Center, and Robert (Lisa) Hughes, of Vernon Center; eleven grandchild­ren, Jason (Amber) Hughes, Lawrence (Teuila) Brown, Adreanna Levett, Tanya (David) Roberts, Rebecca Smith, Jack Tweedy, Gabriel Tweedy, Courtney Claflin, Shane Claflin, Taylor Hughes, Cody Hughes; and eleven great-grandchild­ren; and five nieces. Esther was predecease­d by a daughter, Laurie Levett; two grandchild­ren, Joey Smith and Amber Hughes; two sisters, Jeanne (Anthony) Kokosenski, and Carolyn (Henry) Black.

Private graveside services will be held at the convenienc­e of the family at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cemetery, Paris Hill. Family and friends are invited and may call on Thursday, June 24, 2021, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., 342 Main St., Oneida. Memorial contributi­ons may be made in Esther’s memory to the Vernon Center Ladies Auxiliary, the Vernon Seniors, or the Humane Society.
