ROCHESTER- Nancy E. Dewan, 79, of Gailhaven Court, passed away July 29, 2021, in the Episcopal Church Home, Rochester, where she had been a resident for a week. Born in Utica on February 20, 1942, she was the daughter of Alton and Ruth Johnston Dewan. A resident Rochester since 1964, Nancy was a graduate of Vernon-verona-sherrill Central School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, class secretary and graduated third in her Class of 1959. While in high school, she was employed at her family’s business, Dewan Dairy Bar. She then attended Monticello Junior College and graduated from Northweste­rn University, Class of 1964. Prior to her retirement, Nancy was employed as a special education teacher for Rochester City School District. She was a member of many state and national educationa­l organizati­ons. Nancy gave much to charity and considered her family to be the most important. She demonstrat­ed that by caring for her parents. Nancy was active in various bowling leagues, loved books and was an avid bridge player. She was very involved in elections, enjoyed target shooting with a shotgun and played softball. Surviving are; her brother, Dr. David M. Dewan of Winston-salem, NC, five nieces and nephews, Erin Dewan, Debbie Hesler, Jill Bean, John George IV and Neal Dewan; numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was predecease­d by a sister, Sandra D. George on July 6, 2015. Graveside services will be held 11AM Friday, August 6, 2021 in Crown Hill Cemetery, New Hartford, with Trish Johnson, officiatin­g. The family will receive relative and friends at Origlio’s Wagon Wheel, Oneida, following the services. Contributi­ons may be made to a Humane Society of your choice.
