It’s worth the wait: Boeheim’s Army defeats Team 23 to win TBT Championship
Boeheim’s Army waited seven years to capture its first TBT title. Keifer Sykes made sure that no one would ever forget how the long wait ended.
With his team trailing 67-66 in the latter stages of the Elam Ending, Sykes connected on a deep threepointer to hit the Target Score and send Boeheim’s Army to its first TBT championship with a 69-67 victory over Team 23.
Sykes led all scorers with 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting.
“I got my feet up under me,” said Sykes of his gamewinning shot, which sent the Syracuse faithful into a frenzy inside the University of Dayton Arena, which was packed with a record crowd for a TBT championship game. “I’ve been practicing it all my life.”
Sykes, who led Boeheim’s Army in scoring once before in the tournament, picked up for the injured Deandre Kane and for Tyrese Rice, the team’s leading scorer who was held to just eight points on 3-for-14 shooting.
Chris Mccullough, whose potential game-winning
three-pointer rimmed out earlier in the Elam Ending, finished with nine points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Syracuse University alumni squad.
D.J. Kennedy, who extended his own record with his fifth TBT title, chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds for Boeheim’s Army, which hit 94% (16-for-17) of its free throws.
“I can’t believe it,” said Kennedy, a fourtime TBT champion with Overseas Elite who joined Boeheim’s Army this summer. “I don’t think people realize how hard it is. I’m just happy that we were able to get it done.”
Eric Devendorf, the only player to appear in all seven TBTS with Boeheim’s Army, praised his teammates afterwards.
“We never quit,” said the former Orange star. “We never stopped fighting. That’s the kind of team we wanted to put together. Everybody contributed. People had to sacrifice something. We came together as a group and made it happen.”
Boeheim’s Army became the fifth champion in TBT’S eight-year history, and the fourth alumni team to take home TBT’S grand prize.
