A SWIFT TAKEOVER
The Taliban were removed from power in Afghanistan by U.s.-led forces in 2001, but the group has seized control of the country this month following a rapid offensive. NATO ended its military mission in Afghanistan and switched to an “advise and assist” role in June 2014. Districts have been taken and retaken (by both sides), only to be lost shortly thereafter, decreasing the security situation. The capital, Kabul, was the last major city to fall to the offensive that began months ago but accelerated as the hardline Islamists gained control of territories. These maps from FDD’S Long War Journal show the Taliban’s rapid takeover of the county in 2021.
