The high school sports fall season is back. And this time, it feels like it is finally back to normal. Last year, the fall sports season was split up into two segments. But now, it seems like we are returning to form. And Stockbridge Valley helped us kick off a new season.
The Stockbridge Valley girls soccer team took home a win in their first regular-season outing to bring us into the new season as they take down Richfield Springs 3-1. Stockbridge Valley head coach, Mark Kiser, gave us an inside look at the roster for the season and what he expects from this team.
“The Girls Varsity Soccer Team will return 15 players this season and seven new faces added for a roster of 22. Seasoned veterans include; JR. Alissa Mazzye at Midfield/forward, JR. Abby Redd at Forward/midfield, JR. Abby Smith at Defense, SR. Sarah Hofmeister at Defense, SR. Alyssa Enslow at Defense/midfield, and last but certainly not least 7th-year Senior Jill Jacobs at Forward. Goals this year are to compete for a league Title and continue into post-sea
son play. We are combined with Morrisville Eaton, so we will be classified as a C school this season. I have an outstanding assistant, Matt Jacob, who brings not only a wealth of knowledge to the program but also great positive energy.”
Jill Jacobs had two goals and one assist, while Abby Jacobs had three saves in goal.
Stockbridge had complete control over this game. While Richfield Springs broke the 0-0 tie early on, the Cougars didn’t let that affect their confidence as the game progressed. Stockbridge had possession for most of the game, never allowing Richfield Springs to garner any momentum. And the charge was lead by senior Jill Jacobs. Jacobs has been a machine for Stockbridge athletics for the past seven years and looks to continue her dominance in her final year.
And the Stockbridge Valley boys look to replicate the same success and continue the program under head coach Jay Lehmann.
“Our team is coming together. We are trying to sweat our way through this hot weather to get ready for our season. Our goal will always be to contend for a league championship and be in the race come sectional time. I think we have a lot of experience on our teams, and I am looking to see how well they work together and push our program forward.”
But of course, with fall high school sports back, that means football is back. So Oneida and VVS look to continue their winning ways.
VVS head coach, Gary Oliver, said “The kids have been working hard, and our older kids are helping the new kids on the team so we can try and keep our success from the Spring going into this Fall. Not an easy task. Our goal is to put ourselves in a position to be competitive and successful.” VVS, during the Fall sports season two, went a perfect 5-0. With that powerful defensive presence, Vernon Verona Sherrill will be a mighty team to take down.
On the side of their rivals, Oneida last season didn’t fair as well but were still competitive. “The seniors really love football. They have worked very hard.” head coach Jason Fuller said. “We are working hard to provide them with a fun experience. The juniors and other underclassmen are also working hard trying to get some experience for next year. Most of what we do is for love of the game and opportunities for normalcy. We have hit the weight room hard. We have a bunch of guys with a lot of experience, so that helps with installing schemes.”
