Oneida-josephine E. Jones, 89, of Main Street, passed away October 2, 2021, in Oneida Health Hospital, following a brief illness.

Born in Oneida on August 18, 1932, she was the daughter of John E. and Nellie Sterling White. A lifelong resident of Oneida, Josephine was a graduate of Oneida High School and CCBI Associates. She married her soulmate Leonard H. Jones in St. Agatha’s Church on February 9, 1963 and enjoyed 44 years of marriage until Leonard died on September 29, 2007. Prior to her retirement, Josephine was employed with Oneida City Hospital as an accountant and formerly owned and operated the Trestle Acres Bed & Breakfast in Vernon, NY for thirty years. Josephine was a former Girl Scouts troop leader and she helped establish the Knee-hi To Knowledge Preschool program. She was a 40+ year member of the Oneida Castle Garden Club, the NYS District V of the Federated Garden Club where she also served as a board member and was a member of the St. Patrick’s School Mother’s Club, where among many things she helped produce their newspaper. Josephine was a communican­t of St. Patrick’s Church where she served on the Parish Council.

Josephine was blessed with a terriàc Irish wit and sense of humor. She was a pleasure to be around and was beloved by everyone she spent time with. She was always very active; whether sewing one of her beautiful quilts that adorn their home, completing the home projects they listed on the wall, Àlling in a crossword puzzle in ink like a champ, or always in the kitchen baking bread and cooking. Surviving are: two daughters, Cecilia Cowen and Nellie (Earnest Critelli) Jones, both of Oneida; one son, Daniel H. (Janet) Jones of Oneida; four grandchild­ren, Peter Cowen, Donald Cowen, Daniel “Harry” Jones and Jamison “Jamie” Jones; one sister, Johanna Jones of Verona; two sisters-in-law, Josephine White of Canastota and Lucille Oakes of St. Johnsbury, VT and several nieces, including a very special friendship with her niece Susanna White, and nephews. She was predecease­d by two brothers, John E. White, Jr. and James E. White; brothers-in-law, Donald Jones and Daniel “Buster” Jones, a nephew, Peter Jones, and her beloved dog Shula.

Josephine and her daughter Nellie would like to thank Dr. Keith Marshall and the nurses at Verona Healthcare for years of excellent medical care and concern. She never could lie to him that she was still sneaking a cigar or two here and there. A funeral mass will be held 10AM Wednesday at St. Patrick’s Church. Interment will be immediatel­y following the mass, in Grove Cemetery, Verona, NY. Friends may call at the Campbell-dean Funeral
