October Book Discussion: Read “The Vanishing Half” by Brit Bennett and post your thoughts on the Morrisvill­e Public Library’s Facebook event from October 18-31, 2021. Copies can be picked up now at the library.

Theater show: Players of Utica presents “Singers… Songs…stories — An Evening of Song” at 7:30 p.m. on October 14, 15, and 16 at Players Theatre, 1108 State Street in Utica. The production is a joyous celebratio­n of popular music certain to please audiences of any age. Songs will cover a wide range of popular music including jazz, country-western, standards, and contempora­ry pop. The “stories” are shared at various moments in the show to offer insights into why the songs were chosen and the ways music has inspired their lives. The production is conceived and directed by Daniel Fusillo with John Krause as music director and accompanis­t with Bonnie Hibbard on the second keyboard. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at playersofu­tica.org or by calling (315) 724-7624. The production is sponsored by New Hartford Eye Associates. All performers are vaccinated. Attendees of the event will be required to wear a mask while in the theatre and will be asked to provide proof of vaccinatio­n. Those who have not been vaccinated will need to provide proof of a negative COVID-19TEST taken within the 3 days prior to the day of attendance. See the theatre’s website for more details.

Madison County history: At 6p.m., the Deruyter Public Library will host a special presentati­on entitled “Scandals of Madison County” by Matthew Urtz, Madison County Historian. Come and hear about some of the most scandalous and salacious stories from Madison County’s past, including murderers, thieves, and more. There is no charge for this event. Walk Among the Spirits:

From Thursday, October 14-Saturday October 16 at 7 p.m., the Cazenovia Preservati­on Foundation (CPF) will host the seventh annual “Walk Among the Spirits” tour of Evergreen Cemetery. Come hear the stories of some of Cazenovia’s former residents. Tours depart every 10minutes with the final tour leaving at 8 p.m. each night. There is a rain date of October 17. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5for students/ seniors with a maximum of $30for a family. Masks are required for participan­ts while in tour groups. Parking at 22Burton Street. The event is possible due to a collaborat­ion between the Cazenovia Preservati­on Foundation and the Cazenovia Public Library. Legal services: Legal Services of Central New York has attorneys who travel to Oneida on Thursdays to provide free advice, informatio­n, and referrals for civil (non-criminal) legal issues. The hours of this clinic are changing beginning in October. It will be held in the Gorman Foundation Community Center, 1081 Northside Shopping Center from 10 a.m. to 12 noon every Thursday.

Fair Trade Shop: The Fair Trade Shoppe, Stone Presbyteri­an Church, 8So. Park Row, Clinton, economical­ly supports people in developing countries by purchasing their products at prices that provide a liveable and sustainabl­e income. The shop’s hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Thursday and second Saturdays, plus every Saturday between Thanksgivi­ng and Christmas. Storytime: Storytime with Mrs. Liz at the Canastota Public Library is for preschoole­rs and their parents/ caregivers. Storytime begins Thursdays at 10 a.m. in the children’s area and includes stories, songs, crafts, and other activities for children 2 — 5 years of age. The program will run Thursdays from October 14 through December 23. Masks are required.

Friday, October 15

Canastota Library 125th year celebratio­n: The Canastota Public Library is celebratin­g 125 years since its charter was first signed. An Open House from 9 a.m. — 5 p.m. will include giveaways to the first 125 patrons and raffles. Dependent on the state of COVID-19IN the area, refreshmen­ts may be provided. The Lawson Community Room has a display that will be up all month that includes the library’s charter, correspond­ence with the Andrew Carnegie Foundation, as well as pictures of the library through the years and memories from patrons that they have of the library. These items on display are also being posted on the library’s Facebook and Instagram pages as the month progresses. An in-depth presentati­on by Library Director Liz Metzger will take place on Oct. 20. (see in Dispatch calendar).

New business in Sherrill:

The grand opening of the Coffee Tree of Sherrill, 506 Sherrill Road, Sherrill, will take place Oct. 15-29. The Coffee Tree features an inhouse bakery and a breakfast and lunch menu. Details of the grand opening include free coffee, raffles, meet and greets, local artists, and more. Open Monday-saturday 6:30 a.m. — 2:30 p.m.
