Raiders Race Past Lafayette, 9-5

Colgate scored early and often and took advantage of five Lafayette errors to clinch the series with a 9-5 victory on a chilly Sunday afternoon at Metzgar Fields.

Colgate used a two-out rally to open the scoring in the top of the second. Meaghan Houk cranked a triple to the base of the wall in right field and scored the game’s first run when Rebecca Johnson reached on a throwing error on the infield.

The Raiders took advantage of another error in the top of the third. Jillian Herbst’s grounder to short was bobbled to put two runners on base and Kara Fusco made it costly with a three-run homer to left center to stretch Colgate’s lead to 4-0.

Bailey Misken stranded runners in scoring position in two of the first three innings but didn’t

have the same fortune in the fourth. Kaili Reitano put the home team on the board with a two-run single and later scored on an RBI single by Natasha Miner to trim the deficit to 4-3.

Steph Jacoby turned the momentum back in Colgate’s favor with an RBI single to left field in the top of the fifth. Quinn Livesay added to her strong weekend with an infield single to score Taylor Ludwick and the Raiders built a 6-3 cushion.

Colgate went right back

to work in the top of the sixth. After Rachel Carney and Bailey Burns reached base, Herbst brought them both home with a two-run double to right center. Lafayette’s fifth error of the afternoon allowed Herbst to score and Colgate pushed its lead to 9-4.

Lafayette scored a run on two hits in the seventh but Kaitlyn Borruso buckled down to close out the 9-5 victory and another series win for the Raiders.

“I’m happy with the

way we bounced back today. We were able to make the adjustments needed to score some runs. We’re looking forward to getting back to work to strengthen our defense. We can’t afford to leave

outs on the field but overall I am proud of the way we battled today.”

Colgate (14-17, 4-2 Patriot) is back on the road Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader at Siena starting at 2 p.m.
