Crunch fall to Comets, 5-1

The Syracuse Crunch fell to the Utica Comets, 5-1, tonight at the Adirondack Bank Center.

The loss moves the Crunch to 35-25-7-2 on the season and wraps up the 14game season series against the Comets.

Goaltender Hugo Alnefelt turned aside 24-of-28 shots in net for the Crunch. Akira Schmid stopped 25of-26 between the pipes for the Comets. Syracuse was unable to convert on four power play opportunities, but went a perfect 7-for-7 on the penalty kill.

The Comets opened scoring 8:09 into the game when Nikita Okhotiuk scored with a wrister from the left circle. Five minutes into the second period, Utica doubled their lead. Alexander Holtz had the puck along the goal line and centered it for Reilly Walsh to send home.

Syracuse stole one back at the 16:68 mark of the second period when Darren Raddysh set up Anthony Richard for a shorthanded breakaway.

Utica added three more in the third period to take the win. At 14:31, Tyler Wotherspoon scored from the left circle during a shorthanded 2-on-1. Three minutes later, Brian Flynn hit the empty net. Brian Halonen then potted a wrister from the right circle with 21 seconds remaining in the game.

Weather dampens start to spring sport season

It doesn’t feel like we are in the spring sports season. Well, actually, it does. Spring weather has been striking reasonably hard, throwing a bit of a monkey wrench into some of our local sports teams. It is relatively early in the season; however, multiple squads have only been able to see the field at infrequent times. But we do have a bit of a breakdown to go over.

Oneida boys have gotten off to a fiery start to the year, scoring a combined 37 runs in their first two games, taking down Uticanotre Dame and their rival, the V.V.S. Red Devils. Last year, Oneida didn’t have the best season over with a record of 5-12, but it looks like they have hit the ground running to start this year. The Oneida softball squad is off to the same 2-0 start and is very much looking to repeat their success last year.

The Red Devils have not had the start they would have wanted, but they can quickly turn it around with still many more games to play. Unfortunately, the softball team has not yet started the season.

The Cougars of Stockbridge Valley are both 1-0 to begin the year, with Abby Reed throwing a no-hitter to start her junior year.

The Madison boys squad has fallen to 0-3 to start the year, giving up a total of 51 runs. The lady Blue Devils have not played a game this season.

The Hamilton boys and girls teams have both started the year 1-0, with Kyleigh Pearson going 2-2 with an RBI and a triple while Thomas Simpson throwing 5 innings with 7 strikeouts for the boys.

The lady Raiders have started the season strong, going 2-0 to start scoring a total of 24 runs in both games. The Canastota boys team has struggled as they start with a 0-2 record.

With more rain predicted to come in the next week, many more games could be canceled. The only thing we can do is hope the rain goes away and comes back another day.
