Youth Turkey Hunt A Success

-

Despite some strange, or often uncooperative behavior on the part of local turkeys, the Youth Hunt Weekend was a success. Several of the youngsters got toms and all saw or heard birds. The kids were excited and enthused and the 30 mentors enjoyed taking the youngsters out and sharing their excitement. In several cases they saw birds but could not get them to come in range. In other cases they had toms gobble until about 7:30 and then the birds quit gobbling.

Two youngsters got big “boss toms” of 20 and 21 pounds while the others taken were jakes. One youngster had a great video of a big tom strutting and gobbling around the decoy at a distance of 14 yards! In total six of the 15 got birds and all had an exciting time as well as learning a lot. The youngsters had the opportunity that they would not have had otherwise. We will share some photos in next week’s column.

Thanks to Scott Faulkner, ECOS, members of the Wild Turkey Federation, and the Oneida and Madison sportsmen for volunteering or other support of this program.
