Season Review

As spring sports come to a close, we review the season and potential sectional play

As we wrap up the regular season, sectionals begin to take shape and will begin in the coming weeks. Let’s take a look at how our local teams did this year and potentially what to expect for sectional play.

Starting off with Oneida. The Oneida boys got off to a rocking start, winning 6 out of their first 7 games. In those 6 games, they scored a total of 74 runs to really set the tone offensively. However, despite the fast start, Oneida started to slow down significantly. Oneida then went on a cold spell with, losing 6 out of their last 8 games. After losing top Camden 4-7 in their last game of the year, Oneida sits at 8-7 with a league record of 6-5. They finish the year in 5th place in the TVL, but still can make a huge impact in sectionals.

Ironically, the Oneida girls have had the inverse of their baseball counterparts. They started off a bit slow but ramped up the intensity and finished with a 13-4 overall record and a TVL record of 101, which secured first place. Last season they made it to the class B final, which they ended up coming short. They look to amend that loss this go around.

The Vernon-veronasherrill Red Devils have had a pretty rough spring. This year, softball went 1-10, which would make two years of not-so-great softball from the Red Devils. However, this is still a young squad, so, with a couple of more years of growth, V.V.S. softball could be back sooner rather than later.

The boys also seemed to struggle this year. After an average season last year, going 7-7, the Red Devils took a step back with a 4-12 outing this season. They finish with 3-8 league record, which makes them tied with CVA in 6th place.

The lady Raiders of Canastota have had a standout year, going 14-3 with an 8-3 league record, and will be a force to reckon with in the class B tournament. The boys, unfortunately, did not have the year as the girls had. They ended the year with a 4-14 record.

Stockbridge has one heck of a year when it comes to the spring. The boys hold the record of 9-3-1 for now but may need to finish a contest to get the seeding accurate. They started out the season with a 7 game winning streak and took the CCL by storm. Depending on how they handle the tie, the Cougars will most likely sit at 2nd in the CCL.

With softball, no need for discussion. Stockbridge Valley softball steamrolled through their season, sitting at a 14-2 overall record with a 12-0 league record. If there is a team that wants vengeance from last year, it is this team after a shocking first-round loss.

The Madison softball squad wasn’t able to get any momentum as they ended the year with a disappointing 2-15 record, while the boys also seemed to struggle, finishing with a record of 5-11.

The Emerald Knights of Hamilton sit with a record just above .500, sitting at 7-6. A little bit of a mixed bag of a year for Hamilton baseball, but they are still a dangerous team. Hamilton softball had favored a bit better this year, going 11-5 and finishing in the middle of the pack in the Center State Conference.

Morrisville-eaton softball did not have a good year. They may have a few games left, but as of right now, they sit at 2-13. But just like the V.V.S. Red Devils, they are a young team that can grow over the next few years. But if you flip the script, the boys are sitting near the top of the Center State Conference with an 11-3 record.

Sectional seeding should be out soon, and we will get to see who made it and who just missed the cut. However, no matter what side of the line a team may fall on, it is essential never to take this for granted because, like a couple of years ago, we could have had no season at all.

Reminder that the season has not yet officially wrapped so some records may not reflect accurately.
