- By The Dispatch Staff newsroom@oneidadispatch.com

ONEIDA, N.Y. —The spring session of the Oneida Family YMCA, 701 Seneca St., is offering a Sensory Swim Program beginning March 10. The program is open to the public. The fee is $30 for YMCA members, $95 for non-members. A participant’s support person is free.

Register now by calling the Oneida YMCA front desk at 315363-7788.

The Sensory Swim program, accessible and integrated swim lessons, teaches basic water safety and swimming skills. The class is structured similarly to the parent-child classes, where an instructor leads the group in activities and participants practice skills at their own pace and skill level.

The instructor also works one-on-one with each person throughout the classes to meet individual needs but may not be in the water the whole time.

Classes begin Friday, March 10 and run through Friday, April 28, except for April 7.

Class times are structured as follows:

Drop-in throughout the class from 4 to 5:30 p.m.: Register for the whole class and come and go for the time and activity that works best for you and your loved one.

Gentle Sensory Time from 4 to 4:30 p.m.: Quieter time for adjusting to the water, great for those afraid of the water or who prefer a quieter environment.

Structured Group Activities from 4:30 to 5 p.m.: Thirty minutes of songs, safety skills, drills and toy time.

Swimming Skills Practice from 5 to 5:30 p.m.: Time to practice stroke development and swimming skills with an emphasis

on drowning prevention.
