Preserving history within the community
What does the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum do?
The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum is the only museum in Palm Beach County dedicated to sharing the African, Haitian-American and Caribbean-American cultural contributions to Florida and the U.S. How d o e s your agency benefit the community?
The Spady Museum provides a community resource for historical artistic and cultural education, gallery space for specially curated exhibits, and opportunities for residents and tourists to learn about the African-American, Caribbean-American and Haitian-American experiences in South Florida. Through programs, exhibits and events, the museum offers a full schedule for culture, art and history lovers to appreciate the diversity that created the region that surrounds them. What is your agency’s focus for the future?
The Spady Museum is focusing on offering intimate opportunities for visitors and members to experience cultural diversity by growing signature programs such as its Ride and Remember Bus Tour, which runs from 10 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of each month for $35 per person. Illustrated with colorful stories of the personalities and happenings that influenced the growth of Delray Beach, the tour does more than relay facts – it draws the riders back in time. Climb aboard and enjoy the city’s interesting origin and development.
The Black Movie Experience (BMX) runs from 1 to 4 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month for a $10 per person donation (members are free) at the Spady’s Williams Cottage, adjacent to the museum. Enjoy culturally curated films, along with free snacks for museum members. Every month, a film that showcases the black experience is featured, followed by a lively discussion on its meaning and impact. How can the community help?
The Spady Museum encourages residents and guests to join as members. Memberships ensure the continuation of support for its programs and events, as well as increases its reach throughout the community. Memberships are available at individual and group levels. Children learn how to grow plants and vegetables and live off the land like the settlers of Delray Beach at the Spady Youth Empowerment Cultural Camp, a six-week intensive program from June through August at the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum.
