Purdy impressive in ABC ballroom

The Palm Beach Post - TV Post - - Saturday Evening -

Q: I’m fascinated by Amy Purdy on “Dancing With the Stars” this season. What were the circumstances that caused her need for prosthetic legs? – Susan Pond, Buffalo, N.Y. A: As she explained in the season premiere of the ABC contest, the snowboarder contracted a form of bacterial meningitis when she was 19. That led to both of her legs being amputated below the knee and also to the removal of her spleen. Her father donated a kidney to her, and her spirit speaks for itself – not only through her “Dancing” stint but also through her participation in Season 21 of CBS’ “The Amazing Race” (though she and her partner were eliminated early on). Purdy also is the co-founder of the nonprofit organization Adaptive Action Sports, and her first on-air “Dancing” appearance came right after she returned from Sochi, Russia, having won a bronze medal at the 2014 Paralympics. Q: Didn’t Dakota Johnson, who will be in the movie version of “Fifty Shades of Grey,” have a TV series? – Brad James, Antioch, Calif. A: Indeed, she did. She was the “Kate” of Fox’s “Ben and Kate” during the 2012-13 season, and though the sitcom was highly touted at the start of that television year, it drifted away about midway through. The daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, the actress – perhaps best known in movie terms up to now for her scantily clad scene with Justin Timberlake in “The Social Network” – also was in the series finale of NBC’s “The Office.”
