Seventeen people have applied to fill the Town Council seat being vacated by Wendy Harrison, who is resigning effective Sunday.

The council has the Tuesday and June 16 regular meetings to appoint a new member.

If no replacement is named following the June 16 meeting, a special election is required.

A special election would cost about $60,000.

The new member would serve until the next council election scheduled in March, and could run for another term.

Harrison’s husband, Peter Elwell, who earlier this year resigned after 14 years as town manager of Palm Beach, is now town manager in Brattleboro, Vt., his hometown.

His father, Corwin Elwell, was town manager in Brattleboro from 1960 to 1989.
