PINEHURST, N.C. — Everett Golson is part of the family.

The Notre Dame transfer quarterback arrived last month and was immediately accepted by his Florida State teammates.

“He’s a good people person. He’s very humble,” kicker Roberto Aguayo said. “He’s fit in to the program really fast. He likes it there. He’s a football player. He’s all in. He’s doing what he has to do to put him in that position.”

Cornerback Jalen Ramsey familiarized himself with Golson by watching film of last season’s Notre Dame game. Golson nearly pulled off the upset in Tallahassee. He threw for 313 yards and three touchdowns in the Seminoles’ 31-27 victory.

“We don’t mess with him about it,” Ramsey said. “He’s part of the Nole family now.”

Aguayo is impressed with what he’s seen from Golson.

“I’ve seen him throw,” Aguayo said. “We all know what he can do. He’s played at Notre Dame, played in a national championship game. … He can be as good as he wants to be at Florida State.”

Depth chart notables: Florida State released its preseason depth chart in the media guide and two spots in particular stand out.

At quarterback, redshirt junior Sean Maguire is listed as the starter, not a surprise since Golson has yet to participate in his first official practice. Golson, though, is No. 3 behind redshirt freshman J. J. Cosentino.

Coach Jimbo Fisher likely will handle this competition much like he did two years ago when he revealed late in camp that Jameis Winston had won the job over Jacob Coker. When he makes that announcement, the odds are Golson will have risen to No. 1 on the depth chart.

Lamarcus Brutus, a fifthyear senior from Port St. Lucie, is listed as the starter at free safety ahead of former Treasure Coast High School teammate Keelin Smith. Brutus has played in 31 games but he’s never started.

Brutus is the No. 1 free safety because Tyler Hunter, also a fifth-year senior, is surprisingly listed as a co-starter, along with Trey Marshall, at the star position. Marshall is expected to win that job, and Brutus likely will be challenged by true freshman Derwin James for a starting spot.

Commissioner’s address: ACC Commissioner John Swofford said the ACC will place one medical observer in the press box at each football game this season, communicating to on-field staff regarding matters of player safety. The SEC and Pac-12 just recently put in similar experimental policies. In the ACC and Pac12, the observer will not have the ability to stop the game.

Swofford did not provide an update on a potential standalone ACC network with the league’s TV partner ESPN. “I know you’re tired of hearing me talk and not say much on that subject,” he joked, but added the league was still assessing how best to enter that market.

Yearby absent: Miami sophomore running back Joe Yearby has not participated in voluntary team activities recently while dealing with an undisclosed personal issue, but he is expected to be present when the Hurricanes open practice Aug. 6. Yearby was UM’s second-leading rusher last year and is expected to share the backfield this fall with junior Gus Edwards, freshman Mark Walton and sophomore Trayone Gray.
