Orchard Supply to open its first Palm Beach County store
BOYNTON BEACH — A well-known retail hardware company in Oregon and California, Orchard Supply Hardware, is making its way to South Florida and in late summer will open its first Palm Beach County store in Boynton Beach.
Grand openings are happening Friday through Monday at Orchard’s first Sunshine State locations — four of them — in Broward County.
A subsidiary of Lowe’s Home Improvement, Orchard fills a niche that other stores don’t provide, district manager David Rosa told The Palm Beach Post on Thursday.
“It’s a little different than your normal big-box retailers,” he said. “We really cater to the homeowner and more importantly to the human-sized project.”
Orchard hopes to be the “neighborhood hardware and garden store focused on paint, repair, and the backyard,” according to its website.
The stores, which have seasonal, nursery and garden departments, have an area called the Workbench, where employees rescreen windows and doors, cut glass, sharpen knives and help customers complete projects. Stores also feature a Potting Bench where homeowners who are hesitant to replant what they purchased can have employees do so.
“The backyard today is really the extension of your living room,” Rosa said. “We really cater to the outdoor life style and more importantly, the weather here in Florida is amazing. So we want to not only take advantage of the weather but really the growth that Florida’s experiencing.”
The Boynton Beach location, expected to open in late August or early September, will be adjacent to Dick’s Sporting Goods at Congress Avenue and Old Boynton Road. Orchard is moving into the former Off Broadway Shoes spot, and workers are building an extension for a total of about 36,000 square feet. Construction started in December.
