Familia returns after 15-game ban
Mets closer violated MLB’s policy on domestic violence.
Mets closer Jeurys Familia rejoined the team Thursday after serving a 15-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy, saying he was ready for any role.
New York manager Terry Collins said he’d originally planned to ease Familia back into action but with a worndown bullpen, “that may not be the case tonight” against Philadelphia.
Familia, 27, led the majors with a team-record 51 saves last year. The suspension cost him $730, 328 of hi s $7,425,000 salary.
“I can’t wait to get back on that mound,” Familia said through a translator.
Familia hugged several Phillies in the outfield during batting practice and spent the rest of the time shagging fly balls with teammates.
“I ’ m ve r y happy t o be back with this team,” he said. “I’ve missed these guys very much.”
The Mets made several roster moves before the game.
Fa mi l i a was a c t i v a t e d from the restricted list and catcher Kevin Plawecki was recalled from Triple-A. Righthander Rafael Montero and lefty Sean Gilmartin were optioned to Triple-A and third baseman David Wright was transferred to the 60-day disabled list while recovering from neck surgery.
The Mets were still shorthanded going into the series wrapup with the Phillies.
First baseman Lucas Duda was out wit h a hyperextended left elbow, infielder Wil mer Fl ore s was s i de - l i n e d wi t h a n i n f e c t i o n , a nd c at c her Trav i s d’A rnaud didn’t start because of a bruised right wrist. Collins said he didn’t have any definitive word on how long the three would be out.
Red Sox: Manager John Farrell said pitcher David Price has been dealing with “soreness” in his recovery from an injured left elbow. Price threw on flat ground for the second straight day before Thursday afternoon’s game against Toronto. He is to throw a bullpen session in Baltimore today.
C a r d i n a l s : I n f i e l d e r Jhonny Peralta went on the 10-day disabled list with an upper respiratory issue. Peralta sat out the four previous games, and the move was retroactive to Sunday. St. Louis recalled left-hander Tyler Lyons before Thursday ’s game against Milwaukee.
Blue Jays: Toronto will recall right-hander Mat Latos from Triple-A to start against the Angels tonight, and righthander Casey Lawrence will be called up to pitch Saturday night. Right-hander Aaron Sanchez (finger) and lefthander J.A. Happ (elbow) are on the 10-day disabled list.
Nationals: Second baseman Daniel Murphy was scratched from the lineup with tightness in his right leg, while left fielder Jayson Werth was held out with a sore groin. Shortstop Trea Turner, on t he DL s i nce April 10 with a strained right hamstring, will be activated before today’s game.
Rangers: Rookie righthander Mike Hauschild was designated for assignment.
