Going Go-Go’s crazy on Singer Island
Editor’s Note: In 2001, the GoGo’s rocked Singer Island. They didn’t play any of their hits, but their fans lined up for a charity meet-and-greet. The Post’s Staci Sturrock covered the event, where the band proved they still had the beat. The following is her stor y:
In 1982, Lisa Brown, her sister and two friends got dolled up in their finest Valley Girl garb to see the Go-Go’s play the West Palm Beach Auditorium.
Brown — now a mother of two — paid $15 to meet the allgirl band at a charit y lunch. She even bought a new outfit for the occasion. “I had to pay homage to the Go-Go’s and look my best,” said Brown, of Palm City. “They look so good.”
The Go-Go’s — Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin, Charlotte Caffey, Kathy Valentine and Gina Schock — have reunited for the first time in 17 years for a tour. Hours before their scheduled concert at Sunrise Musical Theatre, they held court in the Hilton Singer Island Resort as 120 fans filed past with album covers and photographs for signing.
For many, singer Carlisle was the chief draw. “I have had a crush on her for 17 years,” said Andrew Levine of Sunrise. “I’m just hoping I don’t pass out.”
Levine, 26, presented a birthday card to his favorite Go-Go, but not the current copy of Playboy, which features Belinda in the buff. “I have it, but I did not think it would be appropriate.”
