Local action needed on climate change
In the June 1 article, “Florida’s fate tied to Paris climate accord, activists say,” Post reporter Kimberly Miller got it right that South Florida is sinking fast. It is a tremendous disappointment that our president chooses to ignore the overwhelming scientific evidence and advice from the majority of scientists, corporations, citizens and many government officials.
The real action is now at the local level (as was pointed out by The Post in “Editorial: Impact from rising seas needs to be met head-on, now,” April 12). Boca Raton just signed the Mayors’ Climate Action Pledge supporting the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact, joining 30 other cities and towns in our area. U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch continues to work tirelessly supporting climate solutions, such as the carbon tax and dividend program advocated by local residents involved in Citizens’ Climate Lobby. This legislation charges polluters a fee per ton of carbon emitted and the money is distributed to every American in the form of a dividend. The annual price per ton gets higher as an incentive for polluters to reduce their carbon emissions.
We do not need to wait for leadership from the White House anymore. Florida residents can prevent our neighborhoods from sinking by taking action on the local level to find effective solutions to climate change right now. print and air space with “real news” reporting? suggestion for their next assignment: the Haverhill post office.
