Oxbridge in a savory 3A state final

- — ADAM LICHTENSTEIN

Two Palm Beach County teams live to fight another week, but one’s season is over. Three takeaways from Friday’s games:

It’s the matchup we’ve waited for all season, and we’ll get it in Orlando in two weeks: Oxbridge Academy vs. Hollywood-Chaminade Madonna. The two powerhouses have been the obvious front-runners in Class 3A this season, and now they’ll square off for the state championship. Who will come out ahead is anybody’s guess. Both teams are loaded with Division I college prospects. They both play well on both sides of the ball, and they don’t have many, if any, flaws. This has the potential to be one of the best championship games at Camping World Stadium this year.

The past two years, the Eagles saw strong seasons end against a team from Broward in the regional finals. It loomed in the back of everyone’s mind — even coach T.J. Jackson said he didn’t want to be like the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, who lost four consecutive Super Bowls.

Atlantic wanted a win, and the Eagles got it, 35-22. Atlantic led from the very first play, as wide receiver Oyeh Lurry-Davis scored on the opening kickoff. The 13-point margin belied how well Atlantic played, as Davie-Western scored two late touchdowns well after the game had been decided.

And now the Eagles get Miami High, which has surprised South Florida football with a 12-win season. The Stingarees will be a tough 8A state semifinal matchup for the Eagles, but playing on their home turf, they can definitely win.

The question around Pahokee’s trip to Madison County came down to this: The Cowboys are good, but how good are they really? The answer is: good enough. Madison County suffocated Pahokee, coming out with a 28-10 win.

Pahokee will be back, as many of its key players are non-seniors. But Friday night was a long bus ride back to Palm Beach County for the Blue Devils.

How did Jodie do?

■ Record: 3-0.

■ Best pick: Jodie had Oxbridge holding Tallahassee-Florida State University to a touchdown, and the ThunderWolves did one better, shutting down their visiting opponent.

How did Adam do?

■ Record: 3-0.

■ Best pick: I had a little more faith in Atlantic’s ability to score points, picking the Eagles to put 24 on the board. They scored 35.
