Jackson skirmishes with defender, leads victory

Louisville regains bragging rights with rout of Kentucky.

Besides displaying his usual prowess running and throwing the football, Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson mixed it up with Kentucky linebacker Jordan Jones in an unusual emotional outburst.

Jackson accounted for 372 yards and two passing touchdowns, Reggie Bonnafon rushed for two scores, and visiting Louisville coasted to a 44-17 victory Saturday.

“There was stuff said,” Jackson said, deflecting questions about the skirmish. “They wanted to win, we wanted to win.”

Play was chippy throughout, and tempers flared in the first quarter as Jackson and Jones clashed after Lonnie Johnson Jr. knocked Jackson out of bounds at Kentucky’s 1 following a 9-yard run.

Jackson bumped Jones after getting up, and the two

players exchanged shoves before wrestling on the ground and igniting several small skirmishes. Jack- son, Cardinals running back Malik Williams, Jones and Johnson were penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct

but remained in the game. Dae Williams’ 1-yard TD after play resumed made it 14-0 and set the stage for the Cardinals’ biggest victory margin in the series since a 59-28 win in 2006.

Jackson completed 15 of 21 passes for 216 yards and rushed 18 times for 156 as Louisville (8-4) avenged last season’s 41-38 loss to the Wildcats (7-5) and earned

Bluegrass bragging rights for the sixth time in the past seven meetings.

Benny Snell rushed 29 times for a career-high 211 yards and two touchdowns for Kentucky.

North Carolina State 33, North Carolina 21:

Junior Nyheim Hines rushed for a career-best 196 yards, including 54- and 48-yard

touchdowns, for the Wolfpack (8-4, 6-2).

QB Ryan Finley ran for two short scores and was 20 of 30 for 204 yards.

Nat h an Elliott’s third touchdown pass, a 1-yard toss to Jordan Cunningham, pulled the Tar Heels (3-9, 1-7) within six with 8:16 remaining. But N.C. State used nearly seven minutes on a drive that ended with Jaylen Samuels’ 10-yard TD run with 1:33 to play.

Elliott finished 21 of 45 for 277 yards.

Duke 31, (at) Wake Forest 23: Daniel Jones threw for two touchdowns and ran for another for Duke (6-6, 3-5), which rallied from a 17-3 deficit and qualified for a bowl game. The Blue Devils closed with consecutive

wins after a six-game losing streak.

Duke took its first lead when Jones scored from 1 yard out to make it 24-23 with 13:53 remaining. It extended the margin on Brittain Brown’s 4-yard run.

Jones finished 25 of 44 for a career-high 346 yards.

John Wolford threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Alex Bachman with 6:44 left in the first half for a 17-3 lead.

But the Demon Deacons (7-5, 4-4) couldn’t take full advantage of three interceptions of Jones, stalling against a Duke defense that surrendered fewer than 25 points for the sixth game in a row.

Syracuse 14: Freshman AJ Dillon didn’t practice or run all week because of an undisclosed injury, but he rushed for 193 yards and three touchdowns as the Eagles (7-5, 4-4) won for the fifth time in six games.

The Orange (4-8, 2-6) lost their fifth straight since their upset of then-No. 2 Clemson.

Dillon just missed hitting 200 yards for the third time and finished the regular season with 1,432.

Darius Wade completed 16 of 20 for 248 yards and one touchdown for BC — a 46-yard pass to Travis Levy — and hit 10 different receivers.

Redshirt freshman Rex Culpepper made his first career start for Syracuse in place of injured Eric Dungey and was 24 of 34 for 280 yards.
