Park Vista student found with unloaded handgun on campus
BOYNTON BEACH — An unloaded handgun was found in a student’s backpack as he or she arrived at Park Vista High School in suburban Boynton Beach on Tuesday, according to a robocall sent to parents.
It was the latest incident this school year in which a Palm Beach County School District student was caught with a firearm. There were already 10 confirmed incidents as of late February.
The robocall went out to parents at 10:15 a.m., according to the school district, which provided a transcript of the call to The Post. The call did not mention the student’s gender, age or class.
In the robocall, Principal Reginald Myers says Park Vista staff spotted a student “behaving in an odd manner” and school police searched the student and his or her belongings and found the gun in the backpack.
“The handgun was confiscated immediately and the student was taken into law enforcement custody,” Myers said in the recording. The student’s current status couldn’t immediately be learned Wednesday.
“Possession of any type of weapon on campus is a serious disciplinary offense, and students who choose to bring these types of items to campus put themselves at the risk of facing serious legal consequences,” Myers said. “I also ask that you remind your child of the importance of the “see something, say something” rule.
An official report about the incident couldn’t immediately be obtained Wednes- day.
The incident followed Tuesday’s arrest of a Park Vista football player on charges that he had stolen three guns from a Palm Beach County sheriff ’s deputy’s home in suburban Lake Worth. The report did not indicate the student ever brought the weapons to the school.
