Backup quarterback suspended for opener
Hurricanes backup quarterback N’Kosi Perry did not make the trip to Arlington, Texas for tonight’s season opener against LSU due to a one-game suspension for violation of team rules, the University of Miami announced Saturday morning.
After serving the suspension, the redshirt freshman will be eligible to play in the home opener against Savannah State on Saturday.
“We took some disciplinary action with N’Kosi, but he has since responded well and made some positive changes,” Hurricanes coach Mark Richt said in a statement released by UM. “He is in good standing going forward and we look forward to seeing him dress for our home opener, and through the rest of the season.”
Perry has been competing with fellow redshirt freshman Cade Weldon to be the Hurricanes’ No. 2 quarterback behind starter Malik Rosier. Perry has taken most of the No. 2 quarterback reps in practice, but Weldon is now expected to be Miami’s backup option against LSU.
True freshman Jarren Williams has been practicing as the fourth-string quarterback but likely will move to No. 3 on the depth chart in Perry’s absence.
Perry signed with the Hurricanes as a consensus fourstar dual-threat quarterback prospect in 2017. But he’s still waiting to throw his first pass in a college game after serving as a member of Miami’s scout team and redshirting in his first season with the program.
