Hurricanes’ Turnover Chain has a new look

- — TOM D’ANGELO

Aside from going down as the most lopsided victory in program history, Miami’s 77-0 victory over Savannah State Saturday will be known as the unveiling of the Turnover Chain 2.0

The chain, which debuted last season and became a symbol of Miami’s success, was boxed up until cornerback Trajan Bandy scooped up a Savannah State fumble with 11:09 remaining in the second quarter. Bandy sprinted to the sideline and proudly showed off the chain to the cheering crowd while being surrounded by his teammates.

“It feels great,” Bandy said about being the first to wear the new chain, especially after he was ejected in the first quarter of the Hurricanes’ season-opening loss to LSU for targeting.

“It’s a lot different from last year,” he said. “I was thinking when I was grabbing it it’s pretty nice. It’s a lot more heavy than last year’s.”

The Hurricanes finished with four takeaways.

The new chain features a Sebastian the Ibis pendent in place of the Miami “U.” The Hurricanes sports information department released details comparing the two chains:

■ The 2018 version weighs roughly three kilograms; the 2017 version weighed roughly two kilograms

■ The 2018 version is roughly 8.5 inches; the 2017 version was 5.5 inches.

■ The 2018 version has approximately 4,000 stones; the 2017 version had 900 stones.

“It’s beautiful,” said defensive lineman Jonathan Garvin. “It’s really special, especially to see it up close.”

Safety Sheldrick Redwine was responsible for Miami’s second takeaway when he intercepted quarterback D’Vonn Gibbons in the third quarter.

Redwine added a twist to the whole turnover experience when he grabbed the whiteboard and scribbled the message “Don’t be a fan later,” apparently a message to those fans who criticized the team following the LSU game and booed quarterback Malik Rosier early in Saturday’s game.
