When the Dolphins have the ball …

Miami pass offense (20th in NFL) vs. Jets pass defense (tied for 24th):

Even without DeVante Parker, Ryan Tanne hill enjoyed a solid performance in his return last week, with his one whopping error coming on an interception in the end zone. He’ll have to exercise extra caution because the Jets lead the league with five interceptions, two by LB Darren Lee. Edge: Jets

Miami run offense (13th) vs. Jets run defense (1st):

You see the Jets allowed just 39 rushing yards (2.6 per carry) in the opener, and it’s tempting to think the Dolphins shouldn’t even bother. But keep in mind: (a) This was against Detroit, which made no attempt to run; (b) Adam Gase called a balanced game last week with 29 rushes and 28 passes. Miami, meanwhile, averaged 4.1 yards on the ground, and the offensive line opened a handful of big holes for Kenyan Drake and Frank Gore. Edge: Miami

Overall rankings: Miami total offense 16th, scoring offense tied for ninth; Jets total defense 16th, scoring defense ninth

When the Jets have the ball …

Jets pass offense (23rd) vs. Miami pass defense (12th):

Any Miami fans belittling Jets fans for going bonkers over QB Sam Darnold’s debut, saying they’ve heard it before for Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith, might want to hold off on their chortling. Darnold had a pick-six on his first throw, then completed 16 of his final 20 passes for 198 yards and two TDs, including a 41-yard TD to Robby Anderson. Watch for an interesting chess match vs. fellow rookie Minkah Fitzpatrick in Miami’s secondary. Edge: Miami

Jets run offense (third) vs. Miami run defense (17th):

New York chewed up the Lions with 36 carries for 169 yards, a 4.7 average. That included Isaiah Crowell cranking out 10.2 per carry (102 yards, two TDs) and Bilal Powell at 5.0 (60 yards). Miami’s revamped linebacking corps made little impact vs. the Titans. That can’t happen again. Edge: Jets

Overall rankings: Jets total offense 14th, scoring offense tied for first; Miami total defense 15th, scoring defense tied for 11th

Special teams

Don’t blink. Last week, the Dolphins conceded a kickoff return for a TD and scored on a kick return (102 yards by Jakeem Grant). They’re hopeful LS John Denney’s shoulder allows him to play in his club-record 210th consecutive game. But the Jets had fireworks of their own on special teams, where Andre Roberts returned one punt 43 yards and a second 78 for a TD. Edge: Jets
