Moto Z3 leads way into the 5G world

- By Jim Rossman Dallas Morning News

Have you heard of 5G?

If you haven’t, you’re going to hear a lot about it in the next few years.

I’m pretty sure you’ve heard of 4G, which is the radio technology inside all our smartphones that makes the data transfer as fast as the Internet connection in many homes.

Now we have 5G, which is the next generation of wireless highspeed internet.

5G is the fifth generation of wireless technology.

CNET says 5G is 10 to 100 times speedier than your typical cellular connection, and even faster than anything you can get with a physical fiber-optic cable going into your house.

5G is going to be a game changer.

I can imagine in a few years we might all be using 5G internet in our homes. I can also see 5G bringing high-speed Internet to homes in rural areas that are not currently served by wired broadband.

5G competition

We in Dallas are lucky. AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile are all bringing 5G to Dallas in late 2018 or early 2019. Verizon has announced that Houston will be getting 5G by the end of 2018.

Verizon was also the first to announce a 5G-compatible handset with the introduction of the Motorola Moto Z3.

I say 5G compatible because today the Z3 is just a mid-level Motorola Android phone. But in early 2019, when Verizon lights up its 5G network, Motorola will release a snap-on 5G module.

That module — Motorola calls them Mods — should make the Z3 the first 5G-compatible phone.

The Z3 will be the latest phone from Motorola to utilize Mods, which attach to the back of the phone magnetically. Mods have been used for a while to add features and functionality like better speakers, extra battery life, better cameras or a projector to Motorola phones.

I think Mods are a great idea, but I have yet to see a Motorola
