Westwood grad Mack on pace for sack marks

- Jon Santucci Treasure Coast Newspapers USA TODAY NETWORK – FLORIDA

Khalil Mack is closing in on two milestones.

One is a career mark. The other would rewrite the NFL record books.

The Los Angeles Chargers' star edge rusher, a Fort Pierce Westwood High School graduate, had two more sacks against the New England Patriots on Sunday. That gives him a league-leading 15 sacks on the season and 99.5 for his career.

Mack's next sack will be No. 100. Only 42 players have hit the century mark since sacks became an official statistic in 1982.

Mack also is just off the pace to tie the NFL single-season sack record of 22.5, a mark hit by Michael Strahan in 2001 and T.J. Watt in 2021. At his current pace, Mack is on track for 21.25 sacks this year.

Technically, Mack is just off the pace. But considering he didn't get a sack in the first three games of the season, Mack is averaging 1.67 sacks per game over the past nine weeks. If he keeps up that pace, he would rack up 8.3 sacks over the final five weeks of the season, which would bring his total to more than 23.

Here's a look at the quarterbacks Mack is expected to face during the final five weeks of the season and how Mack has fared against them.
