Yankees make huge splash with Soto trade
MIAMI GARDENS — The Dolphins have agreed to a contract extension with right tackle Austin Jackson, a league source confirmed Thursday morning.
The deal is three years, $36 million, with $20.7 million guaranteed, NFL Network reported.
Jackson, 24, has blossomed in his fourth season with the club.
Jackson was a first-round pick, 18th overall, in 2020. He had struggled at times early in his career at left tackle and left guard.
But Jackson found a home at Tua Tagovailoa's blind spot. He also has received good coaching from first-year offensive line coach Butch Barry.
Jackson has always had a superior frame and athleticism. He's added strength and polished his technique and gained confidence.
Miami had passed on Jackson's fifth-year option, which was reasonable.
And now they are able to extend Jackson to a reasonable extension.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The New York Yankees came to the winter meetings Sunday with a look of desperation and a fear that their greatness was on the verge of being as outdated as the white pages.
They left town 72 hours later having dominated the meetings and are back to being those old-school, powerful Yankees, for whom money is no object.

MIAMI GARDENS — The news came on Thursday that Austin Jackson, the Dolphins' 24-year-old right tackle, was being rewarded with a big contract.
I thought back to all the times
Jackson respectfully and patiently answered any and all questions when struggling as a very young NFL left tackle and left guard.
I'm happy for Austin.
I thought back to all the times the thoughtful, engaging Jackson would express interest in casual conversation about family.
He wanted to know, for example, how my daughter had liked a particular Broadway show in New York.
I'm happy for Austin.
The last time money came up in a conversation with Austin, a few weeks ago in the Dolphins locker room, we talked about a salary cap website and its projections for what he might stand to make in free agency. three major trades, acquiring All-Star right fielder Juan Soto and two-time Gold Glove winner center fielder Trent Grisham on Wednesday from the San Diego Padres for pitchers Michael King, Drew Thorpe, Randy Vasquez and Jhony Brito and catcher Kyle Higashioka.
It was an awfully steep price, but in the end, with 10 teams expressing interest and three finalists in the bidding, the Yankees simply decided they couldn't afford to be without Soto if they had designs to win their first World Series championship since 2009.
It was a heartbreaking trade for the Padres. GM A.J. Preller called Soto a future Hall of Famer several times during a press conference late Wednesday, and the Padres believed that when they acquired Soto from the Washington Nationals in August 2022 he would lead them to the promised land in three playoff races.
Instead, Soto helped them beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 2022 National League division series, but that was it.
