White Horse Club begins 2nd year
34 players from five counties are on Phoenixville roster for second season
PHOENIXVILLE >> Whowould have thought that a sign-up sheet posted in a social club would lead to kcik-starting a winning Division III Women’s Rugby Club, named Phoenixville White Horse? “Work hard, Play Harder” is the philosophy ofWhite Horse Women’s rugby, and this group of ruggers surely does not disappoint.
Practices began just a year ago inthe spring of 2014, wheremore than half of the women out at Friendship Field had never tackled, rucked, scrummed, mauled or umped in a line out. Powering through the cold practices of March, through a humid summer and right into a competitive fall, the ladies of White Horse competed almost every weekend to gain experience and unity, building a strong foundation for this brand new club.
There were some wins and a lot of losses, but at the end of the day, the pride and commitment of this team is what counted most. On Sept. 13, 2014, PWHWRC opened its first official season in the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union (EPRU) and competed against the Irish from Northeast Philadelphia, taking away the first division victory, 20-12.
Now, 34 players strong and a roster that includes wives, mothers, students and single working professionals, ranging from ages 18 to 50, hailing from Chester, Montgomery, Delaware, Berks and Lancaster counties, there is no stopping this amazing team of Unicorns. One year and a plethora of memories later, White Horse Women’s Rugby Club has emerged on top, making its mark in the rugby world. After taking the division by storm in the fall of 2014, the Women of White Horse are gearing up for the DIII title match on April 26 in Mechanicsville, Va. The club is looking forward to a future filled with competition, new adventures, forever friendships and some good old-fasthioned rugby fun.
