Adult writers of fiction invited to attend twice monthly meetings of the Phoenix Fiction Writers at the library. Free. Group meets second Thursday and third Tuesday of each month from 6:30to 9p.m. in the library’s Harrop Room. Led by Eric Parmer, offering local writers education, empowermen­t and constructi­ve criticism. Writers ask questions about the writing process, read work out loud and receive/ offer input on material read. Writers wishing to have their work critiqued should submit to Eric before each meeting. Free weekly clinic for the public on Thursdays from 5-7p.m., except the second Thursday of the month. Rick Linn, LLC will provide informatio­n, counseling and advocacy in areas of law including family law, trusts and estates, criminal defense, landlordte­nant law and legal issues facing small businesses. The class schedule is as follows: Oct. 22(Excel Intermedia­te); Oct. 29(Google Docs Overview); Nov. 5(Mac OS X Overview*); Dec. 3(Excel Advanced). *Student must bring own laptop. Class time is 10a.m.to noon in the Library’s Community Education Room. Cost for each class is $5per person, payable at class time. Students should bring a USB drive if they wish to save their work and may bring their own laptops. Basic knowledge of computers and the ability to use a keyboard and mouse are required. Let APPRISE, the state-run Medicare counseling program, make Medicare choice less of a challenge with help that has only your interests in mind. Free, unbiased, confidenti­al appointmen­ts with a certified APPRISE counselor will be available at Phoenixvil­le Public Library during Medicare’s Open Enrollment Period. Individual appointmen­ts will be available Wednesdays, Oct. 19 through Nov. 30, at noon, 1:30p.m. or 3p.m. This service is free and open to the public. A new exhibit, “Smoke, Fire and Bravery-- A History of Phoenixvil­le’s Fire Companies” is now open and runs through November at Historical Society of the Phoenixvil­le Area, 204 Church St. Phoenixvil­le. It features photograph­s, documents and artifacts including many from the collection of Phoenixvil­le Hose Hook & Ladder Company No. 1, that have never been seen by the general public. Phoenixvil­le Public Library invites adults in their 20s and 30s to the next gathering of the Millennial­s Book Club, Tuesday, October 25, 7:30PM, at Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant, 130Bridge St., Phoenixvil­le. The book discussed will be “Station Eleven” by Emily St. John Mandel. This is an audacious, darkly glittering novel about art, fame, and ambition set in the eerie days of civilizati­on’s collapse, from the author of three highly acclaimed previous novels. One snowy night a famous Hollywood actor slumps over and dies onstage during a production of King Lear. Hours later, the world as we know it begins to dissolve. A copy of the book may be reserved at the Library or at www.ccls.org. This event is free and open to the public. No reservatio­ns required. Hot Spots and Storied Plot: The East Falls neighborho­od of Philadelph­ia is home to Laurel Hill, one of the few cemeteries in the United States to have received National Historic Landmark status. Join Laurel Hill tour guide (and Phoenixvil­le resident) Rich Wilhelm as he tells tales of a few of the thousands of people buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery, on Thursday, Oct. 27at 7 p.m. at Phoenixvil­le Public Library. The cemetery’s “residents” include the “Mother of Thanksgivi­ng,” “the Bruce Springstee­n of early 20th century American opera,” and the man who took the very first “selfie.” Laurel Hill stories are historic, strange, funny and spooky and perfect for the autumn season. This event is free and open to the public. On Friday, Oct. 28and Saturday, Oct. 29, there will be costume contests. On both nights there will be prizes for best costume ($150); best couple ($50); sexiest costume ($50); scariest costume ($50); and most original costume ($50). On Friday the live band Schwubby Buzzer will perform from 9pm to 1am. On Saturday The Chatterban­d will perform 9pm to 1am. Also on Saturday, Oct. 29 there will be an 8-Inch Cup Golf Tournament. The Chester County Pops Orchestra will present “Halloween Magic” on Sunday, October 30, 3:00PM, at Phoenixvil­le Area Middle School, 1330 Main St., Phoenixvil­le. Phoenixvil­le Public Library is proud to be partnering with the Chesco Pops once again, and a percentage of the concert proceeds will benefit the Library. The Library invites the Phoenixvil­le community to enjoy an afternoon of music and magic as the Pops performs an exciting Halloween programfor kids of all ages. Under the direction of Music Director Joseph Gehring, the Pops will bring the soundtrack­s to some favorite movies to life as the maestro mixes in a little magic on stage. Music from Star Trek Into Darkness, Back to the Future, Spiderman, Gladiator, and How to Train Your Dragon will be featured. Children are invited to come dressed in costume and participat­e in a rousing Halloween parade on stage. Tickets are $20.00 for adults and $15.00for seniors (60+). Open auditions for the production of Sarah Ruhl’s play “Dead Man’s Cell Phone.” Director Aaron Gould is looking to fill all six roles, three women in their 30s or 40s, one woman in her 60s, and two men in their late 30s or 40s. Auditions are by appointmen­t only at the theater on Saturday, Oct. 29from 9a.m. to 5p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 30from 9a.m. to 2 p.m.. Each audition will take approximat­ely 15minutes.
