‘Stitch to Learn, Learn to Stitch’ at PennypackerMills
Pennypacker Mills announces “Stitch to Learn, Learn to Stitch,” an exhibition of embroidery openingWednesday, March 1 and continuing through Jan. 31, 2018. Withmore than 50 selected objects, this exhibit explores the interrelationship between fine embroidery and the education of young girls. In the process of making a sampler containing the alphabet, girls learned the alphabet while also learning embroidery techniques, discipline, and design.
As a teenager they would move on to more advanced decorative or pictorial pieces to demonstrate their skills. Once they were married and their time was occupied with other duties, embroidery was usually done as embellishment for the household if they had the time.
This exhibit will show a variety of samplers, pieces of redwork, and embroidered table scarfs, hand towels, clothing, and decorative pieces.
Admission and parking are free. This exhibit will be included on all tours of the Pennypackermansion and is located on the second floor. In the adjacent Museum Shop, a variety of embroidery sampler kits will be on sale that you can try yourself along with many other items that focus on the vintage style of the early 1900s.
Pennypacker Mills is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m.; closed all Mondays and county holidays.
