Pool players to compete in world championships
Team from Phoenixville prepares for the pool world championships in Las Vegas
PHOENIXVILLE » “Problem Child” will be leaving home in the coming weeks to battle for $25,000 in first-place prizemoney at the 2017 APA 8-Ball World Championship, conducted by the American Poolplayers Association.
“Problem Child,” a poolplayers group from Phoenixville, will be joiningmore than 700 other qualified teams from North America that will be traveling to theWestgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino to compete for the world title from Aug. 14-19 and a portion of more than $1 million in guaranteed prize money.
Problem Child are members of the American Poolplayers Association (APA) Pool League and participate in weekly league play at Gallaghers Tavern in Phoenixville. Team members include: Dan Green, Nicholas Shumate, Anthony Gertenitch, Guillermo Constanza, Ralph Valenteen, Jr., Chris Noecker, Vicky Kaminsky and Laura Baker.
The APA, based in Lake Saint Louis, Missouri., sanctions the world’s largest amateur pool league, known as the APA Pool League throughout the United States and as the Canadian Pool League in Canada. More than 250,000 members compete in weekly 8-Ball and 9-Ball League play. The APA is generally recognized as the Governing Body of Amateur Pool, having established the official rules, championships, formats and handicap systems for the sport of amateur billiards.
The APA produces three major tournaments each year— the APA World Pool Championships, the APA Poolplayer Championships
and the U.S. Amateur Championship— that, together, pay out nearly $1.5 million in cash and prizes annually. The APA World Pool Championships were recognized by Guinness World Records in 2010 as the “world’s largest pool tournament.”
