WEST GOSHEN » Anyone who has ever visited a dog kennel knows they can be very loud, with the calls of prospective pets echoing off the tiled walls. On Thursday the Brandywine Valley SPCA was especially loud — with shouts of joy for the newly renamed “Alex and Matthew’s Canine Companions Kennel” and a $100,000 gift to go along with it.

The gift came from Chad Gobel, a member of the BVSPCA board of directors for the past year. The namesakes for the new kennel are his sons, Alex, 12, and Matthew, 3.

“I was introduced to the BVSPCA about two years ago when I adopted our dog Diamond, then a year ago we brought home our adopted cat, Luna,” Gobel told the assembled staff, volunteers and well wishers. “I saw first hand the importance and passion of this organization. Nothing could be more important than being a voice and advocate for our community’s most innocent and in need. As a father nothing could bemore important than inspiring your children to live a life with compassion and kindness.”

Gobel is CEO of the Gobel Group, a health care consulting company based in Kennett Square.

This is the largest individual donation in the 88year history of the BVSPCA, which takes in over 12,000 animals a year. The West Chester kennel has 85 stalls and has asmany as 150-200 animals, dogs and cats. The BVSPCA is a no-kill shelter serving Chester, Delaware and New Castle counties.

The kennel was built in the 1950s and last refurbished in 2009, said Brandywine Valley SPCA spokeswoman Linda Torcelli.

Gobel said the money would go towards improving the experience in the kennel for the dogs. New Kuranda bedding, new flooring as well as enrichment toys for the animals as they wait for their forever family. The Kuranda beds, which sit off the floor are orthopedic, chew proof and easy to clean.

The building lobby is also expected to be refurbished.

“I have been involved in animal welfare causes for a long time and had the opportunity to interact with many committed and passionate individuals,” said Adam Lamb, BVSPCA chief executive officer. “Chad is definitely one of those. His generosity is inspiring. His energy is infectious. And his commitment to our animals, our people, and our community is remarkable.”

Asked about their experience at finding a pet, Gobel reminisced about his families adoption of Diamond, their 7-year-old pit bull. “She ran over and kissed Alex, there was a connection, we knew she was the dog for us.

“I hope this encourages others to make a donation to share your pride and support for the BVSPCA,” Gobel said.” There is a tremendous need.”
