Lafayette getting a lift from Jaworski

The Lafayette men’s basketball team is off to a slow start but the Leopards are getting solid play from freshman Justin Jaworski.

The 6-foot-1, 188-pound guard, a former Perkiomen Valley standout, is second on the teaminscor­ing with a 13.7 average. He also has 15 rebounds, seven assists and four steals.

Jaworski, who missed the team’s first two games recovering from an ankle injury, really came up big in a 68-67 loss to Drexel on Nov. 24 and a 79-58 victory over Quinnipiac on Dec. 1. He had a college career-high 24 points against Drexel, hitting 9-of-14 shots from the field, and had 19 points against Quinnipiac, hitting 7-of-8 from the field, including 3-for-3 from 3-point range and he was 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Those performanc­es earned him Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors on Dec. 4.

“Justin has been a constant since arriving on campus,” coach Fran O’Hanlon said. “He is consistent­ly working to improve. He plays both ends of the court and brings great toughness to our squad.”

Jaworski played four years and started the last three in basketball and three years of football at Perkiomen Valley. In basketball, he was a three year captain and a three year All-League pick and averaged 22.2 points a game to lead the Vikings to the league title his senior season.

Lafayette (1-8) opens league play against rival Lehigh on Friday, Dec. 29 in Easton.

The senior kicked off the season with the Widener men’s indoor track team at the HolidayMee­t on Dec. 9 in Haverford. He competed in just one event, the 400 meter dash, and he finished first out of 10 sprinters with a time of 50.19. Tupper is the defending Middle Atlantic Conference Champion and posted a time of 49.15 to win it. He went on to compete in the NCAA Division III Championsh­ip and finished 14th with a time of 51.61.

The East Stroudsbur­g junior forward was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Associatio­n Division II All-American second team on Dec. 11. Quinn led the 17-5 Warriors with 13 goals and added an assist for
