Cabrini counting on Washington
Nomi Washington has been the key performer thus far for the Cabrini women’s basketball team.
The 5-foot-7 junior forward, a Phoenixville High grad, leads the Cavaliers in scoring (13.5) and rebounding (6.4). She also has 13 assists, 23 steals and five blocked shots. She’s had two double-doubles – 20 points and 12 rebounds in a 100-94 triple overtime victory overWheaton (Mass) in the first round of the Kean Invitational on Nov. 17 in Union, N.J. and 17 points and 13 rebounds in a 64-60 triumph over Susquehanna on Dec. 9 in Selinsgrove.
“For most of her career, Nomi has been someone who can make things happen by playing the passing lanes, getting steals and creating offense out of the defensive end,” coach Kate Pearson said. “She can use her size and athleticismto rebound at the defensive end.”
And, according to the coach, Washington is still working on her game.
“Offensively, Nomi has always been able to go off the dribble and get to the hoop,” Pearson said. “But she really worked hard in the offseason to improve her outside shooting and has become a three-point threat this season.”
The Cavaliers are 6-2 overall and 2-0 in Colonial States Athletic Conference play at the semester break.
