Fire com­pany to hold camp for kids with spe­cial needs

LIM­ER­ICK » The Lim­er­ick Fire Com­pany will be host­ing its very first Fire­fighter Day Camp for in­di­vid­u­als with spe­cial needs be­gin­ning next month.

The camp will take place on Satur­day, Oct. 13. The event will have two sep­a­rate ses­sions from 9 am un­til 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. un­til 4 p.m.

There are still slots open in both ses­sions for campers to sign up. The camp is open to all ages and all dis­abil­i­ties. The cost of the camp is $25 and each in­di­vid­ual will re­ceive their own shirt and hat from the event.

Some of the ac­tiv­i­ties will in­clude a tour of the fire­house, learn­ing about the fire ap­pa­ra­tus and the gear fire­fight­ers wear, us­ing fire ex­tin­guish­ers and hoses, as well as a smoke de­tec­tor demon­stra­tion.

Fire­fighter and camp or­ga­nizer Gina Wal­ters says, “This is a first camp of its kind in our lo­cal area”. She added, “Of­ten peo­ple with spe­cial needs get fright­ened in time of an emer­gency, this is an op­por­tu­nity for us to show how we are there to help and de­crease the fear in peo­ple”.
