“A Place At The Table”: Phoenixville Area Community Services (PACS) will sponsor a showing of the film “A Place at the Table,” which examines how people can go hungry in a nation with large quantities of food, at The Colonial Theatre in conjunction with World Hunger Day, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. Tickets for the film are $10 and are available on The Colonial Theatre Box Office or online at the colonialtheatre.com. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit PACS.
Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy Benefit Dinner: The Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy (PWC) will hold its annual benefit dinner Oct. 18 at RiverCrest Golf Club and Preserve in Phoenixville. This event is the conservancy’s largest fundraiser and helps the conservancy to continue its mission of conserving and protecting our land and water resources. The evening will include a cocktail reception, a silent auction, wine ring toss, a buffet dinner, Environmental Awards presentation and the Perki-Bay Expedition Flag Presentation. All Hallows Eve Fall Festival: Pennypacker Mills, 5 Haldeman Road, Schwenksville, will host its All Hallows Eve Fall Festival Saturday, Oct. 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. Attendees can paint their own pumpkin, play old-fashioned games, make crafts and enjoy a hay ride. The event also will include corn shucking, an apple cider press, crafts and food for purchase. The mansion will not be open for tours. The event is free.
Halloween parade: College ille Rotary will hold its 62nd annual Halloween parade Wednesday, Oct. 24, along Main Street in Collegeville. There is no rain date. Pre-parade formation will start at 5:45 p.m. There is no need to register for costume judging or the parade; just bring your costumed children or pets to meet in the parking lot behind Schrader’s Service Station, 460 E. Main St. Collegeville Rotary is expanding the Halloween dressup contest beyond dogs to all pets and to floats. Individual costumes will be judged according to age groups. Judging will be from 6 to 6:25 p.m. in the parking lot. The parade will commence at 6:30 p.m. heading east down Main Street to the judges stand near Mint Hair Studio, where there will be a haunted house. Free Dental Day: Advanced Dentistry of Collegeville, 399 Arcola Road, Collegeville, will hold its fifth annual free dental day Nov. 3 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event will consist of games, raffles, a DJ, refreshments, medical and wellness checks, makeup lessons and health screenings by Phoenixville Tower Health Hospital. Holiday Bazaar: Heidelberg United Church of Christ, 251 Perkiomen Ave., Schwenksville, will hold a holiday bazaar Saturday, Nov. 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The bazaar will feature raffle baskets, a chance to win a 40-inch TV, handmade gifts, crafts, vendors and a bake table. Community Turkey Dinner: Trinity Christian UCC Skippack, 2009 Church Road, Skippack, will host a community turkey dinner Saturday, Nov. 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. Meals will be eat in or takeout. Phoenix Fiction Writers: Adult writers of fiction invited to attend twice monthly meetings of the Phoenix Fiction Writers at the library. Free. Group meets second Thursday and third Tuesday of each month from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the library’s Harrop Room. Led by Eric Parmer, offering local writers education, empowerment and constructive criticism. Writers ask questions about the writing process, read work out loud and receive/offer input on material read. Free and open to public. Legal Outreach Clinic: A free legal clinic will be offered at Phoenixville Public Library on the first Thursday of the month from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Ian J. Michener, Esq. of Rick Linn, LLC offers this Phoenixville Legal Outreach Clinic, providing information, counseling, and advocacy in various areas of law, including family law, trusts & estates, criminal defense, landlord-tenant law, and legal issues facing small businesses. Attendees receive a free 20-minute consultation with an attorney, who will provide counseling and access to legal resources as needed. Consultations are provided on a first-come, first served basis. ESL Conversation Group: An ESL Conversation Group meets each Saturday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Phoenixville Public Library. Falling Apart Syndrome: Phoenixville Public Library will host a free presentation, “F.A.S. (Falling Apart Syndrome) Part 2: Lower Extremity,” Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. Dr. Jim Schaffer of Kimberton Chiropractic will be the speaker. Medicare Councseling: Free, unbiased, confidential appointments with a certified APPRISE Medicare counselor will be offered at Phoenixville Public Library during Medicare’s Open Enrollment period. Appointments will be available Wednesdays from Oct. 17 to Dec. 5 at noon and 1:30 and 3 p.m. APPRISE is the state-run Medicare counseling program. This service is free and open to the public. FamilySearch.org Genealogy Series: Phoenixville Public Library will host the FamilySearch. org genealogy workshop series on Thursdays through Nov. 1 from 2 to 3 p.m. Shelli Nye, director of the Valley Forge Family History Center, will be the presenter. The schedule of workshops is as follows: Oct. 18: Finding Digitized Records on FamilySearch.org; Oct. 25: How to Think Like a Researcher; Nov. 1: More Places to Look. Christina Pirello: Phoenixville Public Library will host an appearance by Christina Pirello, star of the PBS series “Christina Cooks” Thursday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. Pirello will talk about her new book, “Back to the Cutting Board: Luscious Plant-Based Recipes to Make You Fall in Love (Again) with the Art of Cooking,” and serve some of her homemade cookies. Microsoft Word & Excel Classes: Phoenixville Public Library will host basic and intermediate level classes on Microsoft’s Word and Excel programs on selected Saturdays in September and October. The class schedule is as follows: Word Intermediate (Oct. 20), Excel Intermediate (Oct. 27). Class time is 10 a.m. to noon. Paul Celentano is the instructor. Prerequisites for the classes are basic computing and computer file management skills. Participants should bring a notebook and a USB thumb drive and may bring their own laptop. This classes are free and open to the public. Space is limited. Reservations are required. Big Jeff: Big Jeff Desmidt, the hardest-working 6-foot, 6-inchtall singer and writer in children’s music, will perform Oct. 20, from 3 to 3:45 p.m. This event is for all ages and families. Ghosts and Legends of the Schuylkill River Valley: Hear strange and unexplained tales of haunted places in Chester, Montgomery and Berks counties and beyond in a special free event at Phoenixville Public Library Monday, Oct. 22, at 7:13 p.m. Author and storyteller Charles J. Adams III will present “Ghosts and Legends of the Schuylkill River Valley.” This event is free and open to the public. Acrylic Painting Class: Phoenixville Public Library will host a step-by-step acrylic painting class with local artist Amy Hathaway Tuesday, Oct. 23, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Cost of the class is $15, which includes a 16-by-20-inch canvas and all the supplies. Financial Aid Seminar: Phoenixville Public Library will host a free seminar, “Financial Aid: The Challenges of Paying for a College Education,” Thursday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. Dr. Kevin Bukatman of College Planning Service America will be the presenter. Students and parents who attend this workshop will learn about the major changes regarding financing a college education, the differences between the FAFSA and CSS financial aid forms, scholarship opportunities available to students and their families, the different ways to pay the balance after financial aid is deducted, federal and private loan options and other important topics. Chesco Pops Orchestra Halloween Concert: The Chesco Pops Orchestra will present a Halloween concert Sunday, Oct. 28, at 3 p.m. at Phoenixville Area Middle School, 1330 S. Main St., Phoenixville. The concert will bring the soundtracks to some favorite spooky movies to life on stage. Children are invited to come dressed in costume and will get a chance to come up on stage in a Halloween parade. Free admission for children. General admission tickets for adults are $20 and $15 for seniors (60+) and can be purchased online at chescopops.org or at the door. A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to the Phoenixville Public Library.
Updating Your Medicare: Phoenixville Public Library will host a free workshop, “Updating Your
Medicare for 2019,” Monday, Oct. 29, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. APPRISE Counselors Thomas Wand and Margaret Ross will be the presenters. Medicare is making a number of changes for 2019. Find out about next year’s changes and learn more about how Medicare can work better for you in this free information session from APPRISE, Pennsylvania’s health insurance counseling program. A Sort-of-Spooky Halloween Storytime: The Phoenixville Public Library will present A Sort-of-Spooky Halloween Storytimes Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 6 to 7 p.m. and Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 11 a.m. to noon. This event is for children and families. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Hear some stories and music, and create a craft, along with a parade through the library. No registration required. Books on Tap: Books on Tap, Phoenixville Public Library’s book discussion group for adults in their 20s and 30s, will meet next Tuesday, Oct. 30, 7 p.m., at Crowded Castle Brewing Company, 242 Bridge St., Phoenixville. The group will discuss “Frankenstein” by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. This event is free and open to the public. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. First-time Home Buyer Workshop: Phoenixville Public Library will host a free first-time home buyer workshop Saturday, Nov. 3, from 10 to 11 a.m. Kimberly Kozelsky, First Choice Loan Services, and Donna Cable, Re/Max Professional, will be the presenters. This informational seminar will discuss mortgages, pre-approvals, common myths of credit, types of loan programs, buyer’s agents, agreements of sale, home inspections and the importance of communication during the home buying process.
