Brain tumor doesn’t stop Myers from scoring 2 TDs in Berks Catholic’s district semifinal victory

- Staff report

Anthony Myers, competing for the first time since being diagnosed with a brain tumor, scored two touchdowns and the Berks Catholic football team defeated Milton Hershey 49-21 in a District 3 Class 4A semifinal on Nov. 17 at Forino Sports Complex.

Myers was cleared to return to action earlier in the week and made most of his opportunity with a 1-yard TD run and an 80-yard punt return to lift the Saints (10-2) in a district championship rematch with Bishop McDevitt, a 40-16 winner over Conrad Weiser in the other semifinal.

Berks Catholic will be seeking a fourth straight district title after defeating Bishop McDevitt in last year’s final 45-24. The game is scheduled for Nov. 23 at a site and time to be determined.

Brandon George had three touchdowns while leading Berks Catholic to a 42-7 halftime advantage. He had 11 rushes for 72 yards while Abdul MacFoy had nine carries for 80 yards and a touchdown. Myers rushed five times for 22 yards.

Jadin Bookser returned an interception 47 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter for BC.

Myers, a 16-year-old sophomore, was diagnosed with a stage 3 malignant brain tumor in late October after experiencing seizures after playing against Fleetwood on Oct. 19. The Team 17 Strong campaign for Myers’ cause has received rapid and wide support around the county and beyond. County schools have helped fund raise by selling Team17Strong t-shirts while Myers has had famous athletes like Eagles wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, 76ers’ JJ Redick, Saints linebacker and Wyomissing native Alex Anzalone and New York Giants linebacker and cancer survivor Mark Herzlich voice their support.
